The Impact of Bottled Water
Approximately 2.74% of the UK population works within the transport industry, equating to around 1.83 million drivers travelling the UK’s road networks. At some point during their working day, many of these drivers will purchase bottled water.
The average cost of bottled water at motorway services ranges from £1.75 to £3.50 per bottle. This means drivers across the UK transport industry spend an estimated £4.75 million on bottled water every single day.
The Environmental Damage
The UK purchases around 7.7 billion single-use plastic water bottles every year – that’s approximately 21 million bottles every day.
Unfortunately:
- A single plastic bottle can take up to 450 years to break down in the environment.
- Less than half (around 57%) of single-use plastic bottles are recycled.
- Millions of bottles end up in landfill, are incinerated or become litter every day.
- Around 16 million plastic bottles end up in landfill each year.
- Between 30–50% of bottled water sold in the UK is imported, increasing the carbon footprint of a product that is readily available from our taps.
